Do We Have the Technologies Necessary to Reduce Global Emissions?
Bridgewater released a research report assessing the maturity and commercialization progress of climate technologies needed to achieve net-zero goals. The report estimates that about 40-50% of the global emissions reductions required to reach net zero can be achieved by scaling already mature technologies, which are cost-competitive for commercial deployment. The remaining 50-60% of emissions reduction needs correspond to technologies that are not yet mature and still require major technological breakthroughs to become commercially viable. The current pace of low-carbon technology scaling is far below what is needed. Scaling mature technologies faces an annual financing gap of $3-5 trillion, and early-stage technology R&D investment is also insufficient.
